Designing a Banner That Attracts Your Audience

Hey!

Think of your LinkedIn™ banner as your personal billboard. It’s the first thing people see when they visit your profile—and just like a well-placed roadside ad, it can make or break your impression … and impressions.

There’s an injury attorney in my area who absolutely crushes his billboards. Why? Because within seconds, I know exactly:

  1. Who he helps

  2. How he helps them

  3. What value he provides

  4. How he’s already succeeded

  5. How to get in touch with him

Your LinkedIn™ banner can do the same if it includes these five key elements:

1. Who You Help
Your banner should make it easy for your audience to self-identify. Let them immediately know if you’re speaking to them.

2. How You Help Them
Be specific about your service or offer. Avoid vague buzzwords—clarity builds trust.

3. What Value You Provide
Showcase the outcome of working with you. What results can people expect?

4. How to Get in Touch
Make it easy to contact you without cluttering your banner with links. Refer viewers to your profile's Featured section instead of external URLs.

5. Relevant Credentials
Highlight any experience or accomplishments that add credibility. For example: “20 years of experience in [Industry]” or “Featured in [Publication].”

Pro Tip: Invest in professional design. A DIY banner can undermine your credibility. If you want to attract clients who are accustomed to prestige and luxury, your canva template will be an impression obstacle. Trust me—I learned the hard way!

Just in case you feel a little called out right now, peep one of my first banners:

Take a moment to review your LinkedIn™ banner. Does it clearly communicate who you are and what you do? If not, these simple updates can make a world of difference.

What’s the most memorable billboard you’ve ever seen? Hit reply and tell me—I’d love to hear about it!

10 lessons on writing...
I've been a writing for aliving for almost 20 years. Here are 10 things I've learned: 1. To be a "writer," the qualifications are simple: You write. 2. Writing well is hard. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't been writing long enough. 3. You don't have to write linearly. If you know where you want to land, start with the last sentence ("punchline" or "reveal") and build around it. 4. Writing is t...
1 truth to accept about LinkedIn™...
One truth we should all accept about LinkedIn: You can post daily. You can post helpfully. You can post strategically. You can post aesthetically. You can follow all the LinkedIn-lebrities and do every single thing they tell you to do. ... and still not become "famous" on LinkedIn. It's not going to happen for everyone. Cold, hard facts. But also ... facts that may set you free a little? Becaus...
