5 Topics You Should Be Posting About on LinkedIn
Dec 28, 2024
At the start of 2023, I was officially over LinkedIn.
I was showing up. I was sharing content. But I wasn’t seeing any meaningful return on my time and effort.
So, I went back to the drawing board. I hit the books (AKA spent weeks doing deep research) and dissected the content strategies of the biggest LinkedIn creators.
Here’s the kicker: I didn’t just look at what or how they were posting currently. I zoomed out and studied how they posted at scale—how their strategies evolved and grew over time.
The patterns were clear. Across the board, the most successful LinkedIn creators consistently shared content from these five distinct categories:
1. Unique Skill or Service
These posts showcase what makes you exceptional in your field. Think how-to content that helps your audience solve problems, learn new techniques, or streamline processes. For example:
- “How I created a sales strategy that doubled revenue in 90 days.”
- “A step-by-step guide to improving employee engagement.”
This type of content establishes you as an authority in your space and builds trust with your audience.
2. Stories from Current or Past Professions
People love stories, especially those with real-world takeaways. Share lessons learned, challenges overcome, or moments of growth from your career. Think how-I posts, such as:
- “How I navigated my first leadership role.”
- “The biggest mistake I made in my career and what it taught me.”
These stories not only resonate on a human level but also position you as someone who’s been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.
3. Branding Content (Your 5% Differentiators)
This is where you get to show off what makes you, you. Share your opinions, offers, or personal values that set you apart. These posts can include:
- Insights into your professional philosophy.
- Details about your unique approach to work.
For instance: “Why I believe work-life balance is a myth (and what we should aim for instead).”
4. Personal Stories
People connect with people, not logos. Personal stories—the ones that give your audience a glimpse into your life—help forge deeper connections. These are your anthem stories that reflect your values and experiences, such as:
- “The time I almost quit and what pulled me back.”
- “How a chance encounter changed my career trajectory.”
These posts humanize you and make your audience root for you.
5. LinkedIn Journey
Let’s be real—if you’re active on LinkedIn, you have opinions about LinkedIn. Share your experiences, pet peeves, and lessons learned on this platform. Posts like these tend to be highly relatable, such as:
- “My biggest LinkedIn mistake and how I fixed it.”
- “Why I’ll never accept another connection request without this.”
This category also gives you a chance to connect with your audience over shared experiences on the platform.
Here’s the good news:
Chances are, you’re already touching on these topics at random. But putting a label on each category gives your content cadence and rhythm.
When you strategically rotate through these five types of posts, you’ll create a more balanced and engaging feed. And when you consistently show up in a way that serves, informs, and connects with your audience, you’ll see the kind of return on investment that makes LinkedIn not just a platform, but a powerful tool for growth.
