Why Some Posts Take Off — and Others Flop
Ever wonder why some posts explode while others barely get a pulse?
I’ve spent years studying and testing.
The data is pretty clear: LinkedIn’s algorithm has a rhythm.
And understanding it gives you a real advantage.
There are 3 critical phases that determine whether your post sinks or soars.
Phase 1: The Initial Test (0–60 minutes)
In the first hour, LinkedIn quietly runs your post through a filter.
It’s checking for:
➜ Post quality
➜ Spam signals
➜ Your initial test audience
This is why timing and early engagement matter so much. The post isn’t being shown to everyone — it’s being tested.
Phase 2: The Engagement Window (1–2 hours)
This is where the real magic (or silence) happens.
LinkedIn watches:
➜ Who’s commenting (comments = 2x more valuable than likes)
➜ How fast people engage
➜ Time spent reading your post
➜ Link or media clicks
This is your chance to fuel the fire. If your post starts strong, LinkedIn rewards it with more exposure.
Phase 3: The Big Decision (2+ hours)
After the engagement window, LinkedIn decides whether to:
➜ Push your post to more of your network
➜ Show it to 2nd- and 3rd-degree connections
➜ Match it against your past performance
And here’s the real kicker:
🚫 Most distribution dies when people post and disappear.
🚫 Or when they ignore early comments.
The algorithm doesn’t have a personality.
(Though blaming it is a lot more fun.)
It’s just math.
And it rewards your time investment, not hacks or shortcuts.
