When to Start Building on LinkedIn™
People often come to me with the same hesitation:
“I’m still at my W-2 job. Is it too soon to start posting on LinkedIn?”
Here’s my answer, every time:
The best time to start building on LinkedIn is before you need it.
Not after the layoff.
Not after you burn out.
Not after you launch the business.
Before.
Why? Because when you wait until you’re desperate…
-
There’s less margin for trial and error
-
You’ll likely get discouraged more quickly
-
You feel pressure to “make it work” immediately
And pressure + public posting?
Not a great combo.
I want to be clear: I’m not anti-9–5. I loved mine.
(I worked at Longhorn Steakhouse for four years during college and still dream about those shifts. I was in the weeds and loving it.)
But here’s the truth no one tells you:
A W-2 is not security. It’s just structure.
It’s a steady paycheck—but you own none of it.
You can lose it in a single meeting.
And when you walk away? Your network and reputation don’t automatically follow.
So if you're even thinking about building something for yourself … whether that’s a side hustle, a consultancy, a business, or a personal brand …
Let me reassure you:
You don’t need total clarity
You don’t need to quit your job
You don’t need to be perfect
You just need to start showing up.
Start posting.
Start connecting.
Start building your bridge.
Even if you’re afraid of:
-
What your employer will think
-
What your coworkers will say
-
Whether HR will breathe down your neck
I’ve helped people build under strict compliance rules.
People with unclear goals.
People worried about getting in trouble.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
And your future self will thank you for starting today.
