My #1 LinkedIn pet peeve...
Don't confuse exceptions on LinkedIn for rules.
One LinkedIn hill I'll die on: What you do on LinkedIn changes over scale.
What the biggest creators are doing right now? Is not what they did at the start of their scale.
Even what I do right now? Not the same.
When the big creators say: "You don't need a post attachment." "You don't have to post consistently."
I find it ... Worrisome.
Because anomalies exist.
Because exceptions exist.
But the numbers are clear.
People who have already established:
➜ Trust
➜ A community
➜ Algorithmic value
They don't have to work as hard as others who are trying to start, build, and scale. I do quarterly third-party research. I work with multiple clients. I experiment personally. I've been here 4 years. There are exceptions. But there's also tried + true standards.
Shut out the noise.
➜ Be consistent.
➜ Comment regularly.
➜ Use plenty of white space.
➜ Share content that brings value.
But most of all: ➜ Be yourself.
Not the next [Big Creator's Name.].
But the first YOU on LinkedIn.
Take in all the advice + theories you see on here and hang on tightly to the ones that resonate with you.
There are stoic best practices.
But there's also selling out.
Find your sweet spot somewhere in the middle.
What is your pet peeve within your industry [because you just read about mine]?
The Go and DO
I don't want to be another newsletter in your inbox. I want to be an actionletter. In every edition, I'll include a "Go-and-Do" [below] to help you take an action step TODAY that improves your LinkedIn™ performance, your business, or even your life.
Step 1: Name your current scale.
Pick the one that fits right now:
-
Just starting
-
Growing but inconsistent
-
Established with regular engagement
Step 2: Write down the last 5 pieces of LinkedIn advice you saved.
Creators. Carousels. Hot takes. “You don’t need to ___ anymore.”
Now ask:
➜ Would this advice still work if I had 200 more followers?
If not, cross it out.
Step 3: Commit to one boring best practice for 30 days.
Not all of them. One.
-
Posting 3x a week
-
Commenting thoughtfully on 5 posts a day
-
Using more white space
-
Writing shorter, clearer hooks
Boring scales. Flash rarely does.
Step 4: Write your next post as yourself, not as anyone else.
Give one clear idea you actually care about.
